【Claude Pro】Are my chats and uploaded files private on a shared Claude account?
No — every member sees the full chat list, so here's what never to upload and how to clean up after yourself.
Are my chats and uploaded files private on a shared Claude account?
No. The sidebar chat list is shared by everyone on the account — any member can open your conversations and view every file you've uploaded. Treat it like a shared workbench, not a private notebook.
Never put these into Claude
- Passports, national IDs, bank cards, home addresses, or other personal identifiers.
- Internal contracts, financial statements, customer lists, or anything under NDA.
- Screenshots or code containing passwords and API keys.
- Any conversation you wouldn't want a stranger reading.
Claude happily analyzes PDFs, Word docs, images, and code — the feature itself is fine to use. Just strip or redact sensitive fields before uploading.
Delete as you go
After working through anything temporary, remove the chat on the spot:
- Hover over the conversation in the left sidebar.
- Click the "…" menu that appears and choose "Delete", then confirm.
For the full walkthrough, including clearing history in bulk, see "How do I delete my Claude conversations?".
Respect the other members too
- Don't open, continue, or delete chats and Projects that aren't yours.
- Don't download or share files other members uploaded.
- If you happen to see someone's private content, pretend you didn't — the courtesy goes both ways.
Need real privacy?
A shared account can't isolate users from each other by design. If most of your work involves confidential material, switch to a private-account product, or ask FoxVIP live support to recommend the right plan.
