How do Claude Pro's models and usage limits work?

Claude Pro gives you both Sonnet and Opus, with usage measured in a rolling 5-hour window. On a shared account the whole group draws from the same allowance; when it runs out, it comes back on its own at the reset time.

Switching models

  1. In claude.ai, find the model name shown below the message box (or at the top of a new chat), e.g. "Claude Sonnet".
  2. Click it to open the dropdown and pick Sonnet (fast, the right default for everyday work) or Opus (strongest reasoning, burns quota much faster).
  3. The switch applies to messages you send from that point on — you can change models mid-conversation.

Use Sonnet for writing, translation, and routine coding; save Opus for genuinely hard reasoning or deep document analysis. That single habit dramatically extends how long the account lasts for everyone.

How the 5-hour window works

  • The limit isn't "X messages per day". Usage is counted within a 5-hour window that starts when you begin chatting; hit the cap and you'll see something like "You've reached your limit — resets at 2:00 PM".
  • The message states the exact reset time. Access returns automatically; nothing needs fixing.
  • Consumption depends on message length, attachment size, and model tier: Opus costs several times more than Sonnet, and the longer a conversation grows, the more each new message costs.

What sharing means in practice

Because the quota is account-wide, busy hours can exhaust it earlier than the advertised per-person limit. A few ways to conserve:

  • Start a fresh chat for each new topic instead of piling onto a 300-message thread.
  • Trim large files down to the relevant sections before uploading.
  • Don't run Opus unless the task actually needs it.

FAQ

  • Hit the limit right after logging in? Another member just used up the current window. Wait for the stated reset time — the account is fine.
  • Limits returning too fast, too often? Normal during peak hours; try off-peak times. If it seriously blocks your work long-term, tell FoxVIP live support with your order number.
