How do I delete my ChatGPT history?

【GPT Plus】How do I delete my ChatGPT history?

Step-by-step: delete a single chat, wipe everything with Delete all chats, and switch off the "Improve the model" training toggle.

How do I delete my ChatGPT history?

There are three levels: delete one chat, wipe everything, and stop your content from being used for model training. All three take a few clicks on the web version; the mobile app menus are laid out the same way.

Delete a single chat

  1. On chatgpt.com, find the conversation in the left sidebar.
  2. Hover over its title and click the icon that appears.
  3. Choose Delete and confirm. The chat disappears from the list immediately.

Wipe everything (Delete all chats)

  1. Click your avatar in the top-right corner → Settings.
  2. On the General tab, find Delete all chats.
  3. Click and confirm; every conversation on the account is removed.

⚠️ Shared-account users: this wipes the entire account, including everyone else's chats. On a shared account, only delete individually — Delete all chats is for dedicated accounts only.

Turn off the training toggle (optional)

If you'd rather your conversations not be used to improve the models:

  1. Avatar → SettingsData controls.
  2. Switch Improve the model for everyone off.

Good to know

  • Deleted chats no longer display anywhere, though OpenAI may retain data briefly per its policy before purging. That retention is invisible to other users — once deleted, they can't see it.
  • If you want no trace from the start, Temporary Chat is the cleaner approach: see "How do I use Temporary Chat (incognito mode) in ChatGPT?"
