Two separate settings — App Language in your profile for menus, and Audio & Subtitles in the player for each title.

How do I change the language and subtitles on HBO Max?

There are two separate settings: the App Language in your profile controls menus and titles, while Audio & Subtitles inside the player controls what you hear and read during playback. Changing one doesn't change the other.

Change the interface language

  1. Sign in and enter your profile.
  2. Click your avatar (top right on the web) and open your profile settings.
  3. Find App Language and pick your language from the list.
  4. Menus, buttons, and descriptions switch immediately.

This only affects your own profile — other members' interfaces stay untouched. A kids profile follows the language configured for it by the managing adult profile, so set it there if a child's menus are in the wrong language.

Change audio and subtitles during playback

  1. Start playing the title.
  2. Move the cursor (or tap the screen) to bring up the player controls.
  3. Click the speech-bubble / gear icon near the bottom right and open Audio & Subtitles.
  4. Pick an audio track (dubbing language) on one side and a subtitle language on the other — they're independent, so English audio with Spanish subtitles is fine.
  5. The change applies instantly and is remembered for your profile.

Why is my language missing?

Available audio and subtitle tracks depend on each title and on the region your IP is in — an HBO original may carry a dozen languages while a licensed movie has two. If a language you need isn't listed for one title, check another; it's a per-content limit, not an account setting.

If subtitles misbehave

  • Garbled or boxy characters → switch to another subtitle language, then back.
  • Subtitles won't turn off → set the subtitle column to Off explicitly, not just a different language.
  • Setting doesn't stick → confirm you're in your own profile; each profile remembers separately.
