How do I get 4K on HBO Max, and how many devices can I use?

The Premium plan (what most FoxVIP orders deliver — confirm on your order page) supports 4K UHD with Dolby Atmos and 4 simultaneous streams. But 4K only actually plays when four conditions line up at once.

The four conditions for 4K

  1. The title is in 4K. Not everything is — look for the "4K Ultra HD" badge on the title's detail page. Most HBO originals qualify; older licensed content often doesn't.
  2. The device supports 4K. A 4K TV with the native app, Apple TV 4K, a 4K Roku or Fire TV stick, etc. Browsers usually cap at 1080p even on a 4K monitor — use the app for full quality.
  3. Enough bandwidth. Sustained 25 Mbps or more; below that, HBO Max quietly steps down to HD.
  4. HDCP 2.2 on the whole chain. The HDMI cable and every port between the streaming device and the screen must support HDCP 2.2, or you get 1080p (or a black screen).

If playback looks soft, check these in order — the badge, the device, a speed test, then the cable.

Devices and simultaneous streams

There's no cap on how many devices can be *signed in*, but the account can only *play* on 4 streams at once account-wide. On a shared order that budget is shared: if everyone hits play in the same evening and a fifth stream starts, someone sees "Too many streams." Stop playback on one device or wait a few minutes and retry.

Downloads

Premium includes up to 100 downloads across the account, available in the mobile app (iOS/Android) — not on TVs or in browsers. Tap the download icon on a title's page, then watch offline from the Downloads tab. Downloads expire after a while and licensed titles may leave the catalog, so refresh them before a long trip.

If quality stays low

  • Run a speed test on the playback device itself — router speed isn't device speed.
  • Try the same title on another 4K device to isolate hardware vs. account.
  • Swap in a certified high-speed HDMI cable to rule out HDCP downgrade.
