How do I generate my first image with Midjourney?

One sentence of description is all it takes: type it into the web app's imagine box, or use /imagine on Discord. In 30–60 seconds you'll get four candidate images.

Generating on the web app (easiest)

1. Log in at www.midjourney.com and open the Create page.
2. Type a prompt into the "What will you imagine?" box, e.g. a cat astronaut floating in space, digital art.
3. Press Enter. A progress card appears below, then finishes with 4 candidate images.
4. Click any image to open it. On the right you'll find:

- Upscale (Subtle/Creative) — turn it into a single high-resolution image. - Vary (Subtle/Strong) — generate new variations based on this image. - Rerun — regenerate four fresh images from the same prompt.

1. The slider icon next to the prompt box opens a settings panel where you can set aspect ratio, model version, and more without memorizing any parameters.

Generating on Discord

1. DM the Midjourney Bot (or use a newbie channel), type /imagine, and click the prompt field that pops up.
2. Enter your prompt and send. The bot replies with a message showing progress percentages.
3. When it finishes, two rows of buttons appear under the grid:

- U1–U4 — upscale that image (top-left = 1, top-right = 2, bottom-left = 3, bottom-right = 4). - V1–V4 — create variations of that image. - 🔄 — reroll the whole prompt.

Beginner tips

• Prompts work best in English — keep them short at first, then add detail (see "How do I write better Midjourney prompts?").
• Generation speed depends on the account's current mode: Fast takes under a minute, Relax queues for a few minutes. Both are normal.

If it doesn't work

• Nothing happens after submitting: the account may have several jobs running — wait for them to finish, then retry.
• Your prompt gets rejected with a red warning: it tripped Midjourney's content filter; reword the flagged terms.
• Can't submit at all: confirm you're properly signed in, then see "Midjourney keeps failing or queueing — what do I do?".
