How do I install and activate the Office desktop apps?

After joining the family group, download the installer from office.com and sign in to any Office app with your Microsoft account. Activation is automatic — there's no product key to enter.

Download and install (Windows / Mac)

1. Go to office.com, click Sign in at the top right, and use the Microsoft account that joined the family group.
2. Click the Install apps button near the top right of the page.
3. Choose Microsoft 365 apps — your browser downloads the installer.
4. Run the installer:

- Windows: double-click OfficeSetup.exe and let it download and install automatically (roughly 5–15 minutes depending on your connection). - Mac: open the .pkg file and follow the installer wizard; you'll be asked for your Mac login password along the way.

Activate

1. Open any app once installation finishes — Word, for example.
2. A sign-in screen appears on first launch. Enter your Microsoft account and password.
3. When you see "You're all set" and no "Unlicensed Product" banner at the top, activation succeeded.
4. The other apps (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) pick up the same sign-in automatically — no need to repeat this.

Troubleshooting

• "Unlicensed Product" banner or grayed-out features: make sure you signed in with the account that accepted the family invitation. Check under File → Account; if it's the wrong account, sign out and back in.
• An older Office version is already installed: uninstall it first (Control Panel on Windows, Applications folder on Mac). Mixing versions is a common cause of activation glitches.
• More than 5 devices: desktop Office activates on at most 5 devices at once. Sign out unused devices from the Devices page at account.microsoft.com first.
• Slow or interrupted download: the installer pulls the full suite from Microsoft's servers. Use a stable connection; if it's interrupted, just run the installer again and it resumes.
