A four-layer checklist — network, app, account, then the title itself — that resolves most black screens, buffering loops, and error codes within minutes.

What should I do when Prime Video won't play?

Most playback failures come down to network or app cache. Work through these four layers in order — the majority are fixed within five minutes.

Layer 1: Network

  1. Test another video site to confirm your speed (1080p needs roughly 5 Mbps).
  2. Restart the router, or cross-test by switching the device between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  3. Turn off any VPN or proxy — Prime Video refuses playback when it detects proxy traffic (often error 4601 or a message mentioning "HTTP Proxy").

Layer 2: App and device

  1. Fully quit the Prime Video app and reopen it (on TVs, close the app from the app switcher, not just Back).
  2. Clear the app cache: on Android/Fire TV, Settings → Apps → Prime Video → Clear cache.
  3. Update the app; very old system firmware can also break playback in newer app versions.
  4. On the web: try another browser (latest Chrome/Edge), disable ad blockers, or use an incognito window.
  5. Black screen with audio on 4K content: check that the HDMI cable supports HDCP 2.2 — swapping in a high-speed HDMI cable often fixes it.

Layer 3: Account status

  1. "Too many devices are streaming": the account is at its 3-stream cap; wait a few minutes.
  2. Suddenly asked to sign in again: the password may have rotated — grab the latest from your FoxVIP order page (and handle any OTP per the verification article).
  3. Confirm your FoxVIP order is still within its validity period.

Layer 4: The title itself

  • "Currently unavailable in your location": the title isn't licensed for your region — normal geo-restriction.
  • Only Rent/Buy buttons, no Play: the title isn't included with the membership.
  • One title fails while others play fine: usually a temporary source issue; try again in a few hours.

Still stuck?

Note the error code (e.g., 1007, 5004, 7031), the time it happened, and your device model, then contact FoxVIP live chat with your order number — it speeds up resolution significantly.
