Google's three hard rules — same country for everyone, periodic location checks, and one family switch per 12 months — and how to stay safely in the group.

What are the family group rules? Can I get removed?

Follow Google's three hard rules and keep your order active, and you won't be removed. The rules: same country for everyone, periodic location checks, and one family switch per 12 months.

Rule 1: everyone in the same country

Google requires every member's account country to match the family manager's. It's checked when you join — and after joining, don't go back to pay.google.com and flip your account to a different country, or Google may re-verify and strip the Premium benefit.

Rule 2: Google periodically verifies member location

Google's family plan terms say members must live in the same household as the manager, enforced by periodic electronic checks on each member's country. In practice enforcement is at the country level: keep your account's country setting unchanged and avoid long-term network setups that obviously contradict the family's country. Ordinary travel or occasional network changes are not a problem.

Rule 3: one family switch per 12 months

The limit people trip over most: after a Google account leaves a family group, it cannot join a new one for 12 months. So:

  1. Before joining, make sure your account hasn't joined or left another family in the past 12 months (this shares one system with Google One and Play Family Library).
  2. Never leave the group voluntarily mid-subscription — leaving burns your one switch, and Google may refuse to let you rejoin.
  3. When your order nears expiry, renew on the same order to keep your seat instead of leaving and joining a new group.

What actually gets people removed

  • The order expires without renewal, so the manager reclaims the seat (normal process — you can be re-invited after renewing, but the 12-month rule may interfere, which is why renewing early is safer).
  • Changing the account's country so it no longer matches the family.
  • Performing manager-only actions like inviting others or editing group details.
